Military ROLL OF HONOURShot down 30 July 1943 in B-17 #4230290. 'Lucky Lady II' Killed in Action (KIA). From an account by a child who saw this plane go down: The German fighters attacked the plane and Mayer jumped out, the fighters shot at him, The account says they mutilated the body. A young boy found the body in the field and rushed to a stream and brought water to baptize him before he died. When the boy (now a man) told this story and we showed him the crew picture he pointed to Mayer and said that was the man he baptized.
