Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
He enlisted 19th November 1942 and after training flew via Labrador - where they were held up for 10 days by bad weather - to the UK to join the Group at Ridgewell from where he would fly on 35 missions. On his very first on July 8 1944, a raid on Calais, a piece of shrapnel killed the pilot. He suffered many more ' near misses' as did all the aircrews.
Post war he returned to the trucking business, eventually owning his own fleet, hauling livestock and fertilizer.
DFC. Air Medal with 3 clusters.
