Springfield, IL | 19 January 2016 | Loren was born Sept. 5, 1917, near Cadwell, Ill., to Charles and Ella (Collins) Jenne. He graduated from Sullivan High School in 1935 and from Eastern Illinois University with B.S. and M.S. degrees in education in 1940 and 1958. During WWII, he piloted B-25 Mitchell bombers, completing 50 bombing missions. He returned to Sullivan in 1943 and married Hazel J. Carnes on Dec. 29, 1943, at Sullivan United Methodist Church. Loren then resumed his teaching career at the Jonathon Creek, Ill., country school and later served as Principal at Sullivan Jr. High School and Moultrie County Treasurer. He remained in the Army Reserves and was promoted to Colonel in 1970 with the Selective Service until his military retirement in 1975. He then worked in the Illinois Office of Education until his full retirement in 1977. Loren stayed active throughout life. He enjoyed flying his own plane and was licensed with multiple ratings. He served 32 years in the military, with active duty in WWII, Korea and during the Vietnam era, receiving numerous military decorations including the Air Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters. |
