Died

Alexandria, VA, USA 17 March 2014 Lew Beall passed away on March 7, 2014 surrounded by his loving family at home in Alexandria, Virginia, where he resided for the past 50 years. Beloved husband of 60 years to Monette Curlee Beall; devoted father to Richard Arthur, Sherrod Ann, Clayton Holly; grandfather to Rick, Jenna, and Jackson; great grandfather to Torston and Greta. Lew was born in Tuttle, North Dakota on August 5, 1919 to Holly and Fannie Beall. After graduating from the University of North Dakota in 1941, he joined the Army Air Corps and flew B24 and B17s as a bomber pilot during WWII. After returning from England in June 1945, he was assigned to C54 training and the Military Air Transport Service. Lew married Verona Kumm from Velva, North Dakota in 1945. In 1946, he was reassigned to HQ Air Training Command in Weisbaden, Germany and was the project officer for closing air bases in Germany, Tripoli, N Africa, and Rome, Italy. In 1948, he flew C47s out of Weisbaden as part of the Berlin Airlift. After the birth of Richard Arthur, Verona succumbed to breast cancer in 1950. Lew was then assigned to the Training Command in Barksdale, Louisiana where he met Monette Curlee, a past member of the Women's Army Corps. They were married in Ft. Worth, Texas. Later, he commanded a civilian pilot training school in Malden, Missouri for the Air Force. After a tour of duty in the Pentagon and Air War College, he spent 3 years as Vice Wing Commander of Eielson AFB, Alaska. From Alaska, he went back to Washington and on to being a Wing Commander in Oson, Korea, where he earned the Legion of Merit and the Air Medal. After 30 years in the Air Force, Lew retired in 1970 and then worked for 20 years as Chief Property Officer for the Lerner Corporation in Wheaton, Maryland. He served on the Board of Directors for Peoples State Bank of Velva, North Dakota for 65 years. A kind and generous man, Lew was an exemplary member of the Greatest Generation, as described by Tom Brokaw. He was comfortable as a leader but had no interest in fame or superfluous attention. He did his best; did what was right; and took care of the people he loved and for whom he felt responsible. His family will be forever grateful for his sound advice, perpetual optimism, foresight, and keen interest in all of our lives. --Obituary published on-line by the Demaine Funeral Home, Alexandria, Virginia
