On a mission to Frankfurt am Main on 8 Feb 1944 plane was hit by flak. With two engines out and a third failing, B-17G #42-39940 'Dixie Jane' was attacked by German fighters and crashed near Laon, France. One crewman was killed. Rest of the crew bailed out prior to the crash. Prisoner of War (POW) at Barth, Germany until liberated by the Russians. .
