John W Byrd
Military ROLL OF HONOURHe was on Charles O. Smith's crew until Smith finished his missions. Then was on 2nd lt. D. J. Schaefer's crew until 26 April 1944 when Byrd was Killed in Action (KIA). Killed from Crash on take-off. Crashed at field near Bletsoe Castle on take off. According to Captain Witt, it was probably a question of motor trouble and then trying to feather and prop and fly instruments at the same time. All crew killed except Sergeant. Littlefield, tail gunner who, though cut and burned seriously, will most certainly pull through.
