John Edward Ranes joined the Iowa National Guard with his twin brother William H Ranes, as they promised their mother that they would not enlist in the Army. They both flew in the 8th AAF in England. John was in the 851st from March until Aug 1944 and then with the 562nd Bomb Sq-388th Bomb Group from Aug until Dec 1944. Ranes married his wife while serving in England. She was from London, but was living in Stone, Staffordshire.
