Military

Plane hit with flak at 18,500 over Berlin. Co-pilot & engineer hit by flak. Nose wheel doors jammed, so dad crawled through a flak hole. Landed in the middle of Berlin & was beaten up after being shot at while running down the street. Crew lined up after capture & Herman Goering himself came to greet the crew. Co-pilot died 13 days later. 4 gunners never bailed out. Dad spent 11 mos. in prison camp & was treated quite well. Knew from smuggled radio who was winning the war. Gen Patton himself and army liberated the camp. Dad navigated the crew over the Atlantic. They flew all alone, so dad had to know his stuff. He was always exceptional at math and had won a scholarship to Withman College before the war.
