John D Fernhout
Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
Aged 18 he enlisted in June 1944, trained as a gunner and, with a replacement crew, boarded the 'Queen Elizabeth' in January 1945. They were assigned to the 95thBG at Horham but the war in Europe ended before they could fly a combat mission and instead flew on 'Operation Chowhound'. He remembered throwing out a large tin of bully beef which crashed through the roof of a house 'I hoped no one was hurt'. He afterwards went to college and was for 38 years employed by the Amoco Oil Co.
