Jay Walter Ames enlisted on 2 October 1942. He received Aviation Cadet training at Santa Ana, California, then twelve weeks of Bombardier training at Victorville Army Air Field in Victorville, California. Ames was awarded Bombardier's Wings on 4 December 1943. Subsequently, he was assigned to Combat Crew 2241 and stationed at Rattlesden Airfield, Suffolk, UK. Assigned to 710BS, 447BG, 8AF USAAF. Ames flew 30 combat missions in a B-17 Flying Fortress "Bouncin Baby" On 21 June 1944 in a raid over Berlin, Ames was wounded by a piece of flak in the upper thigh and was hospitalized for several weeks. His original crew stayed together with a sub Bombardier and was interned in Switzerland. On
25 October 1944, Jay was promoted to 1st LT.
