James A Stevenson
MilitaryShot down 24 May 1944 in B-17 #4231619 'BTO in the ETO. ' Forced landing on German occupied Danish island of Bornholm at southern tip of Sweden. No injuries. Crew divied into twos. Stevenson and the navigator were hidden by Danish resistance and smuggled off island on a liner. Four members of crew were smuggled onto a fishing boat by a family who notified the German ('on to them/' They too had to escape the island. 2sets of two crew members stole boats and rowed to Sweden. Families of the crew members in t he US were notified of Missing in Action (MIA) but Not of crews return to Station due to intense focus of personnel on D-Day invasion. After interrogation, according to Geneva conventions, all crew members were retured to the US to finish their service. Stevenson became Bombardier insturctor in Texas.
