On his seventh mission his Mosquito was shot down on 24 Mar 1945 by friendly P-47 fire leading P-51's against enemy fighters. On 24 March 1945, Lts. Carroll Stubblefield, 653 Squadron pilot and James B Richmond navigator of 654th Squadron, were on a first-of-its-type mission in a PRXVI mosquito that carried special Pfleuger 25 (IFF) homing equipment.
