Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
He enlisted in December 1943, qualified for pilot training but there were few vacancies and he became a gunner. A year later he joined the Group at Thurliegh where he flew on 2 missions on the Ray Scheib crew before crew numbers were cut to 9 - with the elimination of the waist gunner- and he wound up in Supply.
