Tombstone, AZ 85638, USA | 2 May 2001 | May 22, 1918 - May 2, 2001 Howard Alonzo Lindsey, 82, of Tombstone, Ariz., passed away on May 2, 2001. He was born May 22, 1918, on Coronado Island in California. The family homesteaded in Charleston, Tombstone and Parker Canyon areas in 1869. Howard graduated as valedictorian from Tombstone High School in 1935 at the age of fifteen. He attended the University of Arizona in Tucson and graduated in 1941 with a degree in agriculture. Second Lt. Howard Lindsay piloted a B-24 Bomber during World War II. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and numerous combat ribbons. Howard and his wife Helen opened a feed store in Tombstone in 1949 the Lindsey's Hardware store in 1951. They started the Cochise Garden Center Nursery in 1958, which served all of Cochise County. From 1963 to 1985, Howard ran Boothill Graveyard and built part of the existing building that is there now. Howard became a life member of the American Legion Roy Fourr Post No. 24 in 1947 where he served as commander from 1951-52 and was chaplain for several years. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans Association. From 1966 to 1968, Howard was the city magistrate for the city of Tombstone and fire chief for the Tombstone Voluntary Fire Department. He was a Tombstone City Council member for Ward III and served on the Tombstone Unified School District School Board during the 1960s. Howard was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the B.P.O. Elks. He was one of the first founding members of the Tombstone Vigilantes in 1947 and was instrumental in writing the scripts for the reenactments and also played several character roles. In 1971 he was Helldorado's parade marshal. Howard was involved in many civic-minded projects to help the people of Tombstone. In addition to his wife Mabel, Howard is survived by two sons, Michael Lee of Glendale, Ariz., and James Allan of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; a daughter, Gail Ann of Huachuca City, Ariz.; a sister, Dorothy Dean of Tombstone; and two brothers, William Ellsworth of Tombstone and Byrd Balchen of Canelo, Ariz.; granddaughter Holly Ann Towers of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandson Matthew Michael of Glendale; and triplet great-grandsons, Scott David, Luke Michael, and Alex Barry Towers of Phoenix. |
