Object Number - UPL 75817 - PFC Harry W. Essery

Harry William Anthony Essery, Junior

Private First Class, United States Army Air Forces

341st Bombardment Squadron (Heavy),

97th Bombardment  Group (Heavy) Polebrook Field, England

Service Number 19039959

Died,  September 30, 1942, in England.

Born on July 17, 1923 in Des Moines, Iowa. Harry was the son of Harry William Anthony Essery and Zoe Blanche Essery (nee Perry). His father was employed as a heat treatment assistant and his mother was a homemaker. The birth record for Harry states his name as Harry William A. Essery, Jr. The Esserys had five children, including the oldest, Mary, who died the day after she was born in 1918. Another older sister, Evelyn Lavina, married in 1940 and Harry was the older brother of Lois Irene and Zoe Blanche. The family moved from Iowa to Los Angeles in 1935 and settled at 3004 Budau Avenue. Harry attended Wilson High School with the Spring Class of 1943 and he was on the track team his junior year. His cousin, Robert Perry, Spring Class of 1943, lived nearby and was also killed in the war.

Like many in his generation, Harry left school to help win the war. He was accepted for enlistment in the Army Air Corps at March Air Field in Riverside, California on January 27, 1942. He was among the first to volunteer and was assigned to Sheppard Air FIeld in Wichita, Texas. The base had recently been approved for the dual mission as a basic training center and Aviation Mechanics School. The number of new recruits at Sheppard increased in January from 5,500 to 19,000 as the nation mobilized. The occupation of PFC Essery in the Army is unknown but he was possibly an aircraft mechanic.

The 341st Bomber Squadron (Heavy) was established in February 1942 at MacDill Field in Florida and transferred to Sarasota Army Air Field for training and anti-submarine operations over the Atlantic. The squadron deployed to England and arrived at Polebrook Field in mid-June. Combat operations began August 17, 1942 when the squadron participated in the first American heavy bomber mission of the war, attacking targets in France. After PFC Essery’s death, the 97th was transferred to Algeria on November 9, 1942, to support the U.S. invasion in Operation Torch.

PFC Essery had only recently arrived in England when he was admitted to the 30th General Hospital in Nottinghamshire for cellulitis in August. He was returned to duty the same day. The 30th General Hospital also arrived in England in June and was stationed there until it moved to France in 1944. A second hospital admittance card, dated September 1942 was for a “Battalion or Regimental Aid Station Unit” and cited “Causative Agent: Vehicle, other; Diagnosis: Wound, lacerated; Diagnosis: Contusion.” PFC Essery was fatally injured in a motor vehicle accident and died September 30, 1942. He had been in the Army for eight months.

PFC Essery was buried in England on October 3, 1942 at the Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey, England. Brookwood is an American military cemetery for the U.S. World War I dead. The American Battlefield Monuments Commission reports:

“After the United States entered World War II, Brookwood American Cemetery was used for the burial of members of the American armed forces who died in England. Between April 1942 and August 1944, over 3,600 remains were laid to rest in plots surrounding the original World War I burial sections. From January through May 1948, the World War II remains at Brookwood American Cemetery were exhumed and transported to Cambridge for re-interment or sent home to the United States at the request of the next-of-kin.”

PFC Essery was repatriated to his country on December 8, 1948 aboard the U.S. Army Transport Lt. James E. Robinson. His parents were notified after the arrival of the body at the regional Distribution Center for the American Graves Registration Service. He was laid to rest on January 29, 1949 at the Glen Haven Memorial Cemetery in Sylmar, California.

Mrs. Essery applied for her son’s bronze grave marker on February 6, 1949. Both parents are interred next to their son. Harry is also memorialized at Wilson High School in Los Angeles on the World War II Honor List  and the Imperial War Museum Virtual Memorial of the American War Museum, Duxford, England.

Private First Class Harry William Anthony Essery, Junior, answered his country’s call to serve and was the first Wilson High School student known to die in World War II.
