Harry S Meints
MilitaryWIA. 10 Oct 1943 B17F # 42-29943. 2nd Lt Harry S. Meints, was the navigator on the 'Situation Normal' (42-29943). In October of 43, he lost his arm taking fire when they were returning from a bombing mission. He used a radio cord to tourniquet his arm, moved to the nearest gun mount (I believe it was the chin-gun), and shot down the ME109 that was giving them hell. Then he moved back to the navigator's panel and plotted them back to Horham Airfield, England, where they were stationed. When he saw the airfield, he passed out. He received the Silver Star for this action. This account is also recorded in the book 'B-17s Over Berlin. '
