Topeka, KS, USA | 10 August 1999 | Mr. Phippen served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and flew 30 missions over Europe as a crew chief and tail gunner in a B-24. He was decorated with three Bronze Stars, the Flying Cross for heroism, and three overseas bars. He retired from duty in October 1945. He was born July 18, 1923, at Emmett, the son of Joseph A. and Pearl B. Phippen. He graduated from St. Marys High School where he was active in athletics. He lived in California for 30 years before he moved to the Topeka area. Mr. Phippen was a member of Berryton Baptist Church, the New Beginnings Choir with the Parks and Recreation of Topeka's Senior Adults Program, Moose Lodge No. 555, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion. He also was a gifted sculptor. He was married to Hattie Jones in 1946 in Mapleton. She died in 1976. He later was married to Ann Hinkle in 1991.
