Harry G. Smith enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp in September 1941. He served in the 8th Air Force 91st Bomb Group, stationed in England from 1942 to 1945 as a ground crew chief. He was honorably discharged in September 1945 with the rank of Sergeant. On May 24, 1947, he married Mary Edna Dougherty in Enid. His life's work was building and maintaining aircraft, first at Boeing in Wichita, Kansas from 1948 – 1959, and then Vance Air Force Base from 1959 – 1985.
