Shortly after takeoff on a ferry mission from Polebrook to Langford Lodge on 13 Feb 1944, the left engine of P-38F #42-12578 began to smoke and then caught fire. Pilot baled out and the a/c crashed near Holdenby, Northamptonshire. RTD.
