MilitaryPilot, Forkner crew. 381st BG, 534th BS. Shot down 17 August 1943 in B-17 #42-3227. Mission #20 "Black Tuesday" to the ball bearing works at Schweinfurt, Germany. MACR 661. Evaded EE report 2192.

Upon landing in Holland, Lt Forkner hid in some bushes for 3 days. A Dutch boy kept him fed until the resistance picked him up and took him to relative safety. He hid in Maastricht, Holland with 2nd Lt S. Alukinis in the home of of Mademoiselle Pinkus, a Czech national. . She was a former member of the underground until the Gestapo captured much of the organization. She quit hiding downed airmen and worked on hiding jews until Lt's Forkner and Alukinis arrived. Lt. Alukinis successfully crossed the border into France in the autumn of 1943, but Lt Forkner was kept hidden until Liberation at which time he returned to England and then to the US.
