On May 22nd 1944 their mission was to destroy a heavily defended railroad bridge at Liege, with a 1000lb bomb slung under each wing. They dropped through a hole in the clouds into the ' most terrific hail of flak I've ever been in...how we ever got out of that crossfire I'll never know!'.
