He originally was assigned to the 8th AAF. 92nd BG at Bangor ME 14 July 1942, then to the 97th BG/341st BS at Polebrook in August, 42. 97th was deployed to Africa in Nov 1942, assigned to the 12th AAF and on 20 Nov 1942 his plane was bombed by the Germans while still on the airfield It was a direct hit and took 9 of the crew men. One sargeant was found wandering around in shell shock. Plane was B-17 'Hellzapoppin # 41-24376
