On August 17, 1943, he was serving as Copilot aboard “Chief Sly II,” B-17 tail #42-5139, of the 91st Bomb Group, 322nd Bomb Squadron, when it went down 10 miles south of Aachen, Germany.

He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Edmore, Michigan.
