George Douglas Overbey

Military

George D. Overbey was born in War, West Virginia on 4 June 1921. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland and served as a pilot in the 397th Bomb Group, 597th Bombardment Squadron on "The Milk Run Special" B-26B-55 42-96191/9F-N during World War II. He continued to serve in the U.S. Air Force and was assigned in Japan during the Korean War. Later assignments took him to Germany, the Naval War College, the Pentagon and the State Department. He retired as a colonel from the military after 31 years of service. He died at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Perry Point, Maryland on 18 October 1992. The 397th Bomb Group must have meant a lot to him as it is on his tombstone in Arlington National Cemetery.



His military decorations and awards included the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal with 12 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with six campaign stars, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Longevity Service Award with 1 silver Oak Leaf Cluster and 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster.
