On 19 October 1942, he entered the service from Camden, New Jersey as a private. He was divorced without dependents and had three years of high school education; his civilian occupation was listed as: "Semiskilled routemen".

We have Sergeant Black listed on the 437th TCG Special Orders #195, dated 27 December 1943. These were the orders generated at Pope Field (Fort Bragg, NC) for the first phase of movement by air and by rail of the 437th personnel to their eventual overseas deployment.

We have him listed as participating in four 437th flights as a C-47 Crew Chief: Mission DETROIT on 06 June 1944; Mission GALVESTON on 07 June 1944; the resupply and air evacuation Mission #49 in August of 1944 and Operation VARSITY in March 1945.

He is also listed on GO #48, dated 23 April 1945 awarding him and other members of the 437th their second Oak Leaf Cluster for the previously awarded Air Medal. This was for "…meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flights within the period 01 October 1944 through 31 December 1944."
