Emmanuel M Pappas
MilitaryShot down 6 October 1944 in B-17 #42-97275 'Rodger, the Dodger', Prisoner of War (POW) in Stalag Luft 1. He remembered the day after the Russians came- 3 POWs 'liberated' a horse, wagon and upright piano from a nearby farmhouse and drove round the compound banging out 'Alexander's Ragtime Band'. Hundreds of cheering men crowded round, many of them weeping. That incident was his most unforgettable memory of the liberation.
