Jena, Germany | 23 February 1945 | "On 23 February 1945 we bombed the marshaling yards at Jena. This was scheduled to be a low level approach, but fortunately the weather did not cooperate and we bombed from 20,000 feet. We lost some close friends on this mission. Ted Kolaya's plane ditched in the channel and only three of the crewmen survived. John McGrady had been a close friend of Saltarelli (CP), and the enlisted members of both crews shared the same hut at the WAAF site." - Bill Nothstein |
Other Combat Mission |
Horsham St Faith, Norwich, Norfolk NR10, UK | 8 March 1945 | "Perhaps the most challenging experience of our tour was on 8 March 1945 after bombing the marshaling yards at Dillenburg. We crossed the North Sea (110 miles) with #2 and #3 props feathered. The B-24 had the glide angle of a rock! We barely made it to an emergency landing at Horsham St. Faith." - Bill Nothstein |
