Edward Tooke Pate Jr
MilitaryShot down by flak and fighters and crashed near Oberbruch/Rheinland on a mission to a JU88 plant at Wernigerode, Germany on 22 Feb 1944 in B-17F #42-5828 'Sweater Girl'. Prisoner of War (POW). While serving as tail gunner on a B-17F bomber in the U.S. Army Air Force, 8th Air Force Command, 379th Bomb Group, 524th Squadron stationed at Kimbolton, England, with an intended bomb run over the vicinity of Koln, Germany on 22 February 1944, Edward's aircraft was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire. All ten men aboard were captured after parachuting from the damaged aircraft and were taken as prisoners of war (Stalag 6J Krefeld Rheinland, Prussia 51-07), but were liberated in 1945 near the end of World War II by Allied forces. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Edward remained in the Army Air Corps. until being discharged in 1947, during which time he was involved with rehabilitation for an injury received from a shot or shrapnel to his ankle sustained during the downing of his aircraft. He eventually moved to Australia where he died on 10 April 1981. His remains were buried at Andersonville National Cemetery in Macon County, Georgia on 21 August 1981.
