IWM collections
Ardizzone was initially commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee to accompany the British Expeditionary Force to France in March 1940. He then returned to the UK to record the London and Glasgow Blitzes. In January 1942, he witnessed and painted the arrival of the first American troops in the UK in Belfas, before being sent to Cairo, Sicily and Italy with the 8th Army. In February 1945, Ardizzone followed the advancing Allied invasion troops into Germany.
