Duane O Hague
MilitaryCrashed near Slany on 17 Apr 45 in P-51 #44-72358, Prisoner of War (POW).
My father, 2nd Lt Duane O. Hague flew in the 383rd flying P-51's. FTR, failed to return, April 17, 1945.
Messerschmidt 262 shot him down. Bailed out. Captured by the Luftwaffe and taken to an air base where held prisoner until some German's and Local's help him and a few others escape. Not sure how the rest evolved, but dad claims the German's, who helped them escape, surrendered to him and the other POW's he was with. Upon running into U.S Troops, he found out Germany had surrendered. There goes being a big hero was his thoughts.
The above comments are my recollection of a father son talk one night involving a bottle of single malt scotch. Up to that point he never talked about it.
