On November 5, 1943, he was serving as the Pilot of “Big Assed Bird,” B-24 tail #42-7490, of the 392nd Bomb Group, 578th Bomb Squadron, when it was downed over Udem, Germany.

He is buried at the US Military Cemetery at Neuville-en-Condroz, Belgium.
