Flew on B-17 Pappy's Pride - 44-6560, Christmas day, 1944, mission to Darmstadt. Landed at Brussels after flak damage. Crew all RTD. In his words, " Two engines damaged, one feathered but other could not. It started to free-wheel on the shaft, and sparks flew as metal grinded against metal. The propeller ran free as we descended to low-altitude over forest where Battle of the Bulge was raging. After landing, the prop had drug on the ground, supported by wedged shaft.
