Dan was from rural Northeast Georgia and enlisted when he was old enough. Being short in height, he was a natural choice for the tail gunner position on the B24. Flew 17 missions over Germany, Holland, Belgium, and France. After the war, he returned to Georgia, enrolling at the University of Georgia and graduating with a degree in Agriculture. Instead of pursuing a farming career, he joined his uncle in the carpet industry and moved in 1949 to Dalton, GA where he and his wife made their home for the rest of his life. Dan was cheerful but never talked about the war until late in life when the local newspaper interviewed him.
