Killed in Action (KIA)

North Sea 11 April 1944 MISSION LOSS CIRCUMSTANCES: Returning Pilot, Lt. Tiefenthal of the 577th who was flying in the Deputy Leader, right wing slot, off McNichol’s lead ship, reported the latter having to abort the formation just after enemy coast-in due to a faulty engine supercharger operation. McNichols had reported this information by radio to his formation. Beyond this sparse report, there was nothing further in this MACR file to amplify on this crew and aircraft loss, as no traces were found in either Allied or enemy reporting later. (Note: It can be reasonably speculated from studying the mission route across Holland and the Zuider Zee that this aircraft was lost most probably in the North Sea after aborting the mission to return to England and being subsequently shot down by AA fire or enemy fighters. There are no enemy reports, nor Dutch ‘underground’ accounts on any facts of possible capture of any of the (11) crewmen or any one of them being taken as an evade).
