Wasilla, AK 99654, USA | 18 February 2001 | Wasilla resident Clarence Russell Gentle, 80, died Feb. 18, 2001, at Colony Manor, an extended care home in Wasilla. Visitation will be at noon Thursday at Chapel Two, Elmendorf Air Force Base. A service will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Henry Woodall of First Presbyterian Church of Wasilla officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Mr. Gentle was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Birmingham, Ala., to Albert and Pearl Gentle. From 1941-1943 he worked for Sou Railway, leaving to serve honorably in the U.S. Air Force for two years. After his service, he returned to Sou Railway, only to leave in 1948 to re-enlist in the Air Force, continuing his 20-year career. It was during this second period of service, in 1961, that he moved to Anchorage. In 1964 he retired from the Air Force and worked at the Defense Supply Agency from 1964. He moved to Wasilla in 1976 and retired again in 1977. His family wrote, ''His hobbies included woodworking; he spent many happy hours in his woodworking shop and enjoyed his many creations.'' The family added that Mr. Gentle and his wife, Sibyl, were high school sweethearts. They were married 59 years and each was the other's best friend. ''They could always be seen together. His children too were very close to his heart,'' his family said. Mr. Gentle is survived by his wife, Sibyl Gentle of Wasilla; son, Dale Gentle of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Gay Rodriguez of Mansfield, Texas; grandson, Jim Gentle of Seattle, Wash.; and granddaughters, Christina and Monica Rodriguez of Mansfield. He was preceded in death by his son, Clarence Gentle Jr., and his parents. Arrangements by Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown. |
