Chester D Garton
MilitaryChet Garton was my dad. Although he was proud of his service in the war, he seldom spoke about his time in the service. In the early 1990s when the Greatest Generation began to be recognized, he and some other WW2 vets were invited to visit local schools in Chapman, KS and share about their time in the war. This he did gladly and proudly. After his death in Oct. 2000 my sisters and I found several decorations he received along with a small notebook containing a record of his 30 missions. During the last ten years of his life, he was able to contact two or three of his crew members. Genealogy searches show that his ancestors likely came from the vicinity of Garton on the Wolds in Yorkshire. From his base at Attlebridge near Norwich it is only a four-hour drive north; if Dad had known about his kin being so close, I'm certain that he would have tried to visit them. Dad had lots of friends wherever he lived, and he was very civic minded. One of his favorite things was meeting his buddies for coffee and stories most every day and getting in a round or golf at least once a week. He was a good husband, father, citizen, and friend. Although modest about the good that he did, he was the kind of man who deserved to be a member of the Greatest Generation.
