B-17F #42-30847 'Pegasus' returned to England after repeated fighter attacks on a mission to Germany on 10 Feb 1944. One crewman died in the attack and four baled out. The pilot ordered bail out and Gafford became a Prisoner of War (POW) at Stalag 7A then was moved to work camps 3324-46 and 3368 near Munich from which he was liberated. The pilot was able to nurse the plane back to England.
