He flew 12 missions on B-24 'Liberators' and 24 missions in B -17 'Flying Fortresses' . 15 missions were flown in the B-17 "Day's Pay" . The B -17 was a gift to the USAAF from the 51,000 employees of Hanford Eng. Works in Hanford, WA.
Purcell's crew was the first to fly Day's Pay after its delivery overseas. The crew flew a total of 36 missions, with no injuries or crashes. They stayed very close together after the war and Purcell hosted a 40 year reunion at his home in Linden, NC.
