Tampa, FL | 15 December 2005 | GLASGOW, Charles Glenn, a decorated World War II prisoner of war and long-time advocate for the creationist movement, died December 15. He was 85. Mr. Glasgow had retired to Tampa in 1979. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia, and his five children. He will receive full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Mr. Glasgow was born May 8, 1919 in Paris, Tenn. He graduated in 1943 from USMA at West Point. He saw combat in World War II as a B-17 pilot. Shot down over Germany, he remained a prisoner until the end of the war. In 1947 he earned a MSME at Stanford University. Subsequently, he flew 129 missions on the Berlin Airlift. Mr. Glasgow received six Medals, including two Purple Hearts. His post-war military assignments included serving as pilot and aide to the commanding General of Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio, flight-training Shah Reza Pahlavi of Iran, and working in airplane procurement, notably on the C-130. Mr. Glasgow ended his military career with the rank of Lt. Colonel. As a civilian, he joined General Dynamics in San Diego, Calif. when the company was developing the Atlas and Titan I missiles. He went on to work in contracts with Martin-Marietta in Denver, Colo. Later, he restored the profitability of several companies in the fields of engineering and technology in Davenport, Iowa and Nashville, Tenn. Mr. Glasgow was a lifelong and dedicated member of the Church of Christ. He was a knowledgeable teacher of the Bible and worked for decades promoting creationism in school curricula. His love of nature led him to devote much of his time to farming and beekeeping, and to practice physical fitness and healthy diet long before they became fashionable. Mr. Glasgow was uncompromising in his honesty and integrity. |
