An optometrist he enlisted in October 1942, was called up in February 1943, did pilot training and was commissioned in May 1944. He crossed the Atlantic that December - spending Christmas in Iceland en route - and eventually joined the Group in Eye with whom he was to fly on 27 missions. His last and most memorable that to Czechoslovakia when they were attacked by jet fighters. Post war he resumed his optometry practice and stayed in the Reserve for 20 years.
