Pontelabuscro, Italy | 3 July 1944 | On 3 July 1944 while participating in an aerial flight as navigator/bombardier of a B-25 on a mission over fuel dumps at Pontelagoscuro, Italy, Captain Moody's palne was repeatedly hit by heavy enemy anti-aircraft fire. One shell knocked out the right engine during the bomb run. While the pilot struggled to hold the plane on course, Captain Moody carefully released his bomb, scoring a direct hit on the target area. Forced to break formation due to the loss of power, the mountainous terrain made the choice of bailing out very unlikely. Captain Moody helped the pilots select a low level course through the valleys. Despite further damage to the plane from continuing anti-aircraft fire and an attack by enemy fighters, the ship returned to it's home base where a successful single engine landing was executed. His extraordinary achievement in combat reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States. |
