Byrd enlisted July 15 1942 and trained in radio and aircraft maintenance. He was sent overseas and joined the Group at Hardwick 'from 10 at night until 2 o'clock in the morning we would check out all the radios...when the planes returned from a mission we would be waiting to check them out again...'. He afterwards worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone for 31 years.
