32 ,missions, plane was Tommy Thumper D-Day. the scene below with all the thousands of ships in the Channel and all the thousands of planes in the air. Seeing the gun flashes from the battleships. There were 5000 ships in the Channel below us and 11,000 planes in the air with us. When flying near Cologne, Germany seeing the church untouched with everything around it destroyed. Seeing the Eiffel Tower from the air. When returning from a mission when the White Cliffs of Dover were sighted we knew we were safe at home once again. One night when returning froma mission German Fighter Planes got in formation with our planes so they could not be picked up by radar. As our planes were attempting to land the Fighter planes shotdown three of them. the rest of the group had to land at other bases. Our P-60 Night Fighters shot down all the German Fighters before they reached the English Channel. Our crew did not fly on that mission. But we were all lying in a ditch watching.
