Shot down on 7 January 1944 in B-17F #42-30386. Evaded (EVD) (MACR 1963). The A/C was crippled by fighters, fire in the bomb bay, two engines out and the elevator controls also shot out. Crashed near Estree Blanche. Evaded (EVD). Never captured, walked alone for 6 months to central France. Went down to 80 lbs. Joined the FFI and fought with them for 6 months. Finally was free when the southern invasion came through France. B-17G #42-38109 'Cabin in the Sky' crash landed at RAF Redhill, Surrey (NO MACR) on return from a mission to Leipzig on 20 Feb 1944.
