Alfred Charles Froning was born Oct. 1, 1921 to Alfred William and Bessie May Bickford Froning. He died Feb. 26, 1975 and is buried in Clinton Lawn Cemetery, Clinton, IA.
On January 26, 1943, 2nd Lt. Alfred C. Froning was assigned to the 9th Air Force, 57th Fighter Group in Cairo, Egypt. On January 27, 1943, he was further assigned to the 65th Fighter Squadron.
Silver Star citation: Captain (Air Corps) Alfred Charles Froning (ASN: 0-666916), United States Army Air Forces, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action against the enemy as a P-40 Fighter Pilot of the 65th Fighter Squadron, 57th Fighter Group, NINTH Air Force, in action against the enemy in aerial combat in the Mediterranean Theater of Action during World War II. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army Air Forces.
