MilitaryHeading into Cologne, Germany aan 88 mm shell hit left wing of his B-17. It did not explode on impact (as designed) but exploded at altitude above the aircraft raining shapnel down on the aircrat. They went on to the target delivered their bombs then, heavily damaged were able to return to Glatton where they belly landed with no hydraulics . That aircraft never flew again but all crew members survived that mission. Flew on 'Ladies Delight' but not all missions. Flew total of 27 missions
