44-40134
458th BG - 753rd BS - 8th AF
Transferred to the 458th BG during late May in the J for H trade for Project AZON. In the exchange process, this plane was replaced by one from the Replacement Depot. This airplane was replaced at the 492nd BG with 42-95011 Flew more than 50 missions, and two with Lt William R McCoy and his crew, when on 2 March 1945, the aircraft took off and it was discovered that one of the crew's heated suits was not working properly.
The crew decided to return to base, and in the words of the pilot, "...pick up an electrical suit for the Navigator and return on the mission as soon as possible." The aircraft came in with a full load of bombs and fuel, this extra weight possibly not being taken into account as to when to apply the brakes to bring the ship to a safe stop.
The aircraft rolled through the end of the runway where the nose wheel buckled and the ship came to a rest on her nose.
