43-12434 Short-Fuse Sallee, Dunquerque
Richard Turner, "Big Friend, Little Friend", 1969 - This aircraft had 5 aerial victory markings after 11 Feb and six on 3 Mar 1944 so the photo was taken between those dates.
William Hess, "354th Fighter Group" 2002, pg 40-41.
Short-Fuse Sallee AJ-T was assigned to Dick Turner from Dec 1943 to at least May 1944. A Malcom Hood was added prior to 6 Mar 1944. Turner achieved 8 aerial and 1.5 ground victories with it from 5 Jan to 11 Apr 1944. There's an 8 Jun photo of Turner's "nosed up" olive drab P-51 following a landing accident by F/O Ferguson that may be this aircraft. 43-12434 went to the 369th FS where it was assigned to Lt Charles Staley and renamed Dunquerque, IV-R. Following Staley's return to the US in Aug 1944, it was re-assigned to Thomas Bur and coded IV-P.
