On 3/6/44, with 1st.Lt Carl M. Clark, 42-97562 (a H2X-equipped PFF-aircraft) just after becoming airborne struck a vehicle on the runway. No. 3 prop and the right landing gear were damaged. The crew remained in the air until the bulk of the gas had been utilized and made the normal crash landing procedure. No one was injured on either the obstructing vehicle or aircraft. This took place at Bassingbourn airfield, where they were scheduled to lead the 398th BG in a raid on coastal gun batteries in the Pas de Calais area of France.
