Missing in Action on the 27 May 1944 mission to the Mannheim Railroad Yards, Germany. Hit over Mannheim by Flak in ≠2 and 3 engines and in the wings. The Fortress burst into flames, spiralled slowly down and exploded in mid-air. 3 parachutes were seen. Crashed 3km N of Bad Dürkheim, about 25km West of Ludwigshafen, Germany. Pilot John J. Gilbert and Ball turret gunner John F. Whelan were Killed in Action. The others were captured and made Prisoners of War (POW) : Co-pilot: Marvin E. Simard, Navigator: Thomas N. Stefanko, Bombardier: Edward P. Ridings (Died as a POW 16 April 1945 on a forced march from prison camp), Flight engineer/top turret gunner: Manuel Rosen, Radio Operator: Raymond G. Rowland, Left Waist gunner: John T. Jablonski, Right Waist gunner: Anthony Filippi, Tail gunner: Thomas X. Mc Kenna. Missing Air Crew Report - MACR 5338.
